"Detour "is a provocative collection of black-and-white photographs about relationships -- and the ambiguous desire, alienation, and memories that complicate them. This first book by New York photographer Allen Frame, a well-known teacher of photography, constitutes a kind of private theater or personal cinema, with its procession of dark, intimate situations linked by recurring people and places. With scope and intense feeling, Frame's images suggest an experience both haunted and expectant. Allen Frame has had solo exhibitions in New York, Paris, Budapest, and Zurich and has also been the curator of many shows of the work of emerging artists. He teaches at the International Center of Photography, the School of Visual Arts, the Pratt Institute, and the Centro de la Imagen in Mexico City. In 1990, with Nan Goldin and Frank Franca, he created the AIDS installation piece "Electric Blanket, " which has toured throughout the U.S. and internationally. He is a contributing editor of "Bomb "magazine and has written articles for the "New York Times "and photographed for "Die Zeit." Claudia Steinberg lives in New York and writes for German "Vogue, Die Zeit, Architektur und Wohnen," and the "Kunstzeitung.

Framing the West argues that photography was intrinsic to British territorial expansion and settlement on the northwest coast. Williams shows how male and female settlers used photography to establish control over the territory and its indigenous inhabitants, as well as how native peoples eventually turned the technology to their own purposes. Photographs of the region were used to stimulate British immigration and entrepreneuralism, and imagies of babies and children were designed to advertise the population growth of the settlers. Although Indians were taken by Anglos to document their "disappearing" traditions and to show the success of missionary activites, many Indians proved receptive to photography and turned posing for the white man's camera to their own advantage. This book will appeal to those interested in the history of the West, imperialism, gender, photography, and First Nations/Native America.

Full frame - In cinematography and photography, full frame or flat filming captures all of the desired image along with additional visual information surrounding the target frame. One advantage of using full frame filming is that it gives the filmmaker a larger picture to work with when creating a pan and scan transfer of the film; one of the disadvantages is that it does not make optimal use of the available film area for widescreen versions, as anamorphic widescreen does.
